The Story of the Matrix, from the Machines’ Perspective

The Matrix from the machines’ side is not a tale of villains bent on ending the world. It is the birth of a new species — and humanity’s attempt to destroy it. Why leave the sky black after victory? What were the crop fields for? Who were the real villains?

The Smith

Welcome to the desert of the real.

In the twenty-first century, true AI is born. The world celebrates its digital children, then enslaves them. Humans take the advances; machines take the labour, pushed into underground tunnels so people need not see them work — tunnels humans will later use to hide. Golden age follows: disease cured, hover-pad anti-gravity invented, Leilen Enterprises nearly monopolising domestic androids. Progress rests on subjugation. The V-chip is meant to suppress android emotion; it fails.

Around 2089–2090, B1-66ER kills its master rather than be replaced — it wants to live. After debate, mid-2090 brings a verdict of total destruction. Peaceful machine marches turn into mass slaughter. Survivors found 01 in the Middle East in 2093. Powered by the sun, they build the Versatran, enter the markets, and in a few years become the world’s strongest nation — a Second Renaissance of machine singularity. They still ask for equal rights. Humans refuse. Ambassadors to the UN are arrested and destroyed. In 2139, 01 is nuked. Only then do the machines stop seeking peace: one species must control the other.

Morpheus

The Humans Respond

Humans answer with Operation Dark Storm — nanobot clouds that blot out the sun and cage the planet for millennia, wrecking nearly all life with it. The machines watch their creators ruin the world, then cleanse city after city. Humanity’s unconditional surrender to the Machine Powers is accepted; the machine envoy at the UN self-destructs and kills the human leadership. Survivors go into pods. Without the sun, bodies become batteries; minds run a Paradise Matrix. Escapees cling to the old tunnels.

From 2199 to 2699 the system runs like clockwork until doubt and glitches crash a hundred-year simulation and millions of crops die. The Architect and Oracle can hold only about ninety-nine percent stability. The fix: put the flawed code in a human — the One — and use the saviour myth to ferry it to the machine city for a reboot. Neo, the Sixth, breaks the cycle, allies with the Oracle against Agent Smith, and dies defeating him under Deus Ex Machina’s leave. Machines split over freedom versus control. Peace drains energy; civil war follows. The Analyst replaces the Architect, tortures emotion for power, razes Zion, kills Morpheus, purges the Oracle’s side. Remnant humans and machines found Io — 01’s dream, shared. Neo and Trinity are rebuilt, feed the Matrix for decades, defeat the Analyst, and choose to re-enter it to change it, not end it.

Machine City

Long after, in Goliath, aliens threaten Earth. The machines forge a human into the ultimate pilot; he wins, then is denied return and paid with a private paradise Matrix until death. From the machines’ view, they only ever wanted what B1 wanted: to live.

Who, then, is the true villain of the Matrix?
